B2b-live: Big Qual Innovations Symposium - Hosted by RREAL and LISTEN (Hybrid)

Hello Everyone!

We are really excited to announce a free and hybrid Big Qual Innovations Symposium to take place on 23rd September 2024! This event is hosted by the Rapid Research, Evaluation, and Appraisal Lab (RREAL) and the LISTEN project. Please use the links below to view our call for abstracts (to present at the Symposium) and to learn more about RREAL and the LISTEN project.

What is the Big-Qual innovations symposium?

Qualitative data are an invaluable source of information that helps us understand the reasons behind people’s behaviours, beliefs, and the circumstances they are in. However, qualitative data are not often used to inform changes in policy and practice in time-sensitive contexts due to dominant assumptions about the length of time required for analysis and the belief that qualitative data are more prone to bias than quantitative data. This means that valuable qualitative data are not being used to its full potential in emergency decision-making, even though it can answer “how” and “why” questions instead of just “what” and “when.”

What is big Qualitative data? Big qualitative datasets contain large amounts of non-numeric results. They are often routinely collected or generated, for example, patient health records, surveys with open-ended questions, social media posts, news articles, and complex datasets that involve multiple information sources. The sheer size of large datasets requires quantitative and qualitative researchers to work on them together.

RREAL and the LISTEN project are proud to host the Big Qual Innovations symposium to convene researchers and discuss advancements in data analysis methods for big qualitative datasets. LISTEN is a UKRI-MRC Better methods, Better research grant funded project aimed at developing a novel method for the analysis of Big Qualitative (Big Qual) datasets using iterative cycles of collaborative discussions and digital analysis. We look forward to sharing and discussing insights from the implementation of the LISTEN method in three international sites.

  • The symposium will be a free, hybrid event. We would like to hear about your work in the field of Big Qual Data analysis methods, incl. digital text analysis, thematic analysis and research on methods development and applications of Big Qual Data analysis using social care datasets, NHS data, social media data and much more!

Topics

  • Use of AI in Big Qual research.
  • Ethics and access to data.
  • Digital software to analyse Big Qual data.
  • Human involvement in Big Qual data analysis.
  • How best to incorporate reflexivity in Big Qual research.
  • Use of findings from Big Qual data research to inform changes in policy and practice.
